Hummingbirds & Roses
I love it when someone contacts me for a cake that isn’t your run-of-the-mill type of thing.Don’t get me wrong, I love creating all sorts of types of cakes for my clients but sometimes you tend to repeat the same style as it is so popular, again and again and again – I tend to become a little jaded sometimes!!
This client didn’t really know what she wanted so I pounced! How about a painted design? As soon as I saw the invitation I knew what the design would be and, luckily, the client trusted my vision and left it up to me. Yay!
What I love the most is the tattoo-like effect this design projects. The couple were very happy so, mission accomplished!
Based on a tiny illustration on the invitation, I etched the design on the cake oh so lightly and then painted it on with black gel colour, diluted with vodka. I am left handed so a couple of times I came dangerously close to smudging the design on the top but managed to avert any major disasters.
The rose is made of gumpaste – each petal cut, shaped and added to the rose individually, then airbrushed to achieve this deep raspberry pink hue.
