My brother Aris has a passion for competitive skeet shooting, hunting, cooking, his family and appreciates the bizarre. So, what to make for his 40th birthday cake? Maybe a present with stars bursting out of the top with an abundance of happiness…um, nope. How about a big 4-0… errr, nope.
Dead animal? Perfect!

This design is inspired by the amazing Colette Peters and her breathtaking “Just Deserts” design in her book “Colette’s Birthday Cakes”. Colette sculpts her horns from Rice Krispie Treats – and they do look fabulous. I Google-d a recipe and made them as per instructions provided. They set, everything was hunky dory and I was sooo pleased that it was all going to plan. However (there is always a ‘however’ in cake decorating!!) once I started to coat the horns with royal icing, the horns literally disintegrated. So, I ended up carving them from styrofoam and then covered with royal icing.

I was pleased with the final result, and the birthday boy loved it.
