3D novelty cakes are challenging and so, so much fun to make. When asked to replicate a musician’s much loved lute, my initial reaction was ‘Yay!’ but then closer to crunch time of actually creating it I was thinking “How??” !! Too late for that now isn’t it!
This cake was created for my cousin’s little girl’s 1st birthday celebration which took place in a local park.
In coming up with a concept for the cake, I was told that little Christina loved birds. So, putting these two elements together, this design was born.
I’ve always been fascinated by babushka dolls. My mother has one that we used to play with as children, which is pretty much still in tact except for the second smallest one which is missing her top half.
Needless to say, I’ve been enjoying the recent revival of the nesting doll, there are so many beautiful crafts featuring them of late. Following the birth of my second daughter I’ve taken the opportunity to indulge my babushka fetish and her christening was the perfect opportunity to cake-ify them! Read more →
My sister in law is expecting her first baby in November and didnt want a baby shower. So, of course, her husband’s sister and I organised a surprise baby shower. We wanted one!!! So, in between the lies (white lies), the scheming, the stealing her friend’s phone numbers from her phone, emailing invitations and swearing all guests to secrecy we managed to get everyone in the same room, on time and she had absolutely no idea.
It was fabulous.
I was really looking forward to creating this cake for little Eleni’s first birthday. This is a replication of a fabulous children’s stationery design in cake. Sydney based company Paper Eskimo have a gorgeous range of stationery and partyware – this Hot Air Balloon is no exception.
Until I received the request to create this 1st birthday cake, I’d never heard of Sophie la Girafe. Yes, very uncultured of me. Apparently she is vintage…Sophie the Giraffe has been around for more than 49 years…
Since 1961, more than 30 million Sophies have been sold in the world. Geez! Have I been under a rock or something???
Sophie was sculpted, in one piece, from a 12″ square chocolate mud cake. Carved, ganached, covered in fondant with hand painted details. The birthday girl, upon seeing her, exclaimed “OOOHHHHH!” I think she liked it!
A 2 tier version of my princess pillow cake created for an adorable little girl’s 5th birthday.
The pillows were carved from chocolate mud cake, filled with Lindt chocolate ganache.
The crown is made from sugarpaste and airbrushed gold. All jewels are inedible… every girl needs a bit of bling!
I love it when someone contacts me for a cake that isn’t your run-of-the-mill type of thing.Don’t get me wrong, I love creating all sorts of types of cakes for my clients but sometimes you tend to repeat the same style as it is so popular, again and again and again – I tend to become a little jaded sometimes!!
This client didn’t really know what she wanted so I pounced! How about a painted design? As soon as I saw the invitation I knew what the design would be and, luckily, the client trusted my vision and left it up to me. Yay!
What I love the most is the tattoo-like effect this design projects. The couple were very happy so, mission accomplished!
This is a design out of Planet Cake’s book, made for my niece and nephew’s 1st Birthday. Chocolate mud cake carved and sculpted into a giant cupcake.
